About the "Alternative Education"

The Project “Alternative Education” (Alternatyvusis ugdymas in Lithuanian) aimed to create conditions for development of alternative education, to implement its ideas and introduce alternative education methods at school.

The Project was a constituent part of the Education Improvement Project Plus and was initiated by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania (MES). The Project was implemented by the Education Supply Centre (ESC) affiliated with the MES. While implementing the Project “Alternative Education” the ESC was cooperating with schools trying to invent alternative teaching and learning methods and to reduce the number of drop-outs. Project partner was the Panevezys District Educational Centre.

The Project was financed under the Human Resource Development Action Program by the European Social Fund Agency and from the budget of the Republic of Lithuania.

The idea of the Project was to open the door to diverse education: to build alternatives for the current forms of education, respect diversity of schoolchildren, meet their different needs and develop their possibilities for choice at school. The Project epitomized efforts aimed at paving the way for the alternativeness – finding different roads to the child‘s success.

The aim of the Project was to create conditions for development of alternative education, implement its ideas and introduce alternative education methods at school. This is the process of building diversity of education, which is closely linked with learning to teach as well as the changing role of the teacher and changing attitude towards education. Through its diversification the aim was to achieve that the largest possible number of students would acquire basic and secondary education and vocational qualification.

The Project was implemented in two stages, 2009−2011 and 2012−2015.

The activities of the 2nd stage (2012–2015) of the Project:

  1. Changing national legislation and/or adapting it to the needs of alternative education;
  2. Creating and implementing education alternatives:
    1. Productive learning model being implemented in 3 public schools (Kaunas Rokai Secondary School, Kedainiai Youth School and Panevezys District Paistrys Secondary School) and 6 educators being trained to work with Productive Learning group. The pilot project ended in 2014. The Project collaborated with Institute for Productive Learning in Europe (IPLE, Germany).
    2. School networking and cooperation with social partners model (3 public schools, a team of 5 members in each), which aimed to create one-stop-shop based child support system at school. Pilot ended in 2014.
    3. Communication model (3 public schools, a team of 5 members in each), which aimed to create the atmosphere of speaking, listening and understanding of everyone at school. Pilot ended in 2014.
  3. Training of education professionals:
    1. five alternative education training programs for educators developed
    2. seminars, trainings and internships for youth school professionals held
    3. youth schools, educational psychological services and education centres provided with educational literature
    4. in order to achieve a systematic change four modules for teacher training program were prepared and tested at the Mykolas Romeris University.


Within the framework of the Project some additional activities were conducted:

  1. The 24th International Network for Productive Learning Projects and Schools (INEPS) Congress was held in Vilnius in May 2012
  2. Prof. Eduardo Vianna (City University of the New York City, LaGuardia Community College) invited and open lecture “Knowledge, Identity and Social Change: Expanding the Vygotskian project in educational theory and practice” for the students and professors of Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences held.
  3. The book of contemporary educational philosopher Kieran Egan “Learning in Depth” is being prepared (negotiated) for translation into Lithuanian.
